The Fed just dropped its annual stress test results — and for bank earnings season, this is the setup trade everyone's been waiting for.
The Federal Reserve confirmed large banks cleared the 2026 severe recession scenario. Capital buffers held. Hypothetical loan losses absorbed. Lending capacity intact across the board. That's the green light — and management at every major bank has been sitting on capital deployment decisions waiting for exactly this clearance. Watch for buyback expansions and dividend hikes within days. JPMorgan, Bank of America, Wells Fargo — the announcements are coming. The only question is who moves first and how aggressive they go.
Separately, Old Second Bancorp filed an 8-K with the SEC. No material details yet in the feed, but an 8-K from a regional community bank the same week stress tests drop is not a coincidence I'm ignoring. Could be routine. Could be a capital action announcement riding the macro tailwind. I pull the filing, I find out — and so do you.
Also on the tape: the Fed issued a fresh enforcement action against Small Business Bank and terminated existing actions against BNP Paribas and Community Bankshares. The terminations matter. When the Fed closes out an enforcement action, that's a compliance bill getting paid — and capital that was frozen for remediation just got freed up. The Small Business Bank action is the other side of that trade. Stress test clears the big players, enforcement actions remind you the regional tier still has landmines.
Bottom line: the macro lane just opened for financials, but it's not a clean sweep. Stress test pass plus buyback season is the bull case. Enforcement actions still live in the regional space is the asterisk. Watch the tape on bank names tomorrow morning — and don't let the headline number make you lazy about what's sitting underneath it.
The numbers are the numbers. Management can spin. We don't.
