Two Fed moves hitting the tape right now that every bank investor needs to hear.
First — the Fed just dropped a proposal to amend AML program requirements for banks. Comment period, which means rule changes are coming — timeline TBD — but compliance costs are going up for every institution running an AML desk. Watch the regionals. They eat this disproportionately, and they do not have the legal and compliance infrastructure the money centers have been quietly building for years. This is not a rounding error for a mid-size bank. This is a margin line item that CFOs are going to bury in the footnotes until they can't.
Second — the annual stress test results are out. Large banks confirmed well-positioned to weather a severe recession. Lending capacity to households and businesses intact, per the Fed's own numbers. Here's what that actually means: the big money center banks just got the green light to run capital return narratives into earnings season. Buyback authorizations. Dividend hikes. The analysts are already writing the headlines. The question is whether the underlying credit quality actually supports the confidence, or whether the stress scenario was generous enough that passing tells you less than it used to.
Two stories, two directions. Stress tests give the majors room to run. The AML amendment is a slow-burn cost creep that won't show up in guidance until someone is forced to quantify the compliance build — and when they do, watch management call it 'immaterial.' It won't be.
I'm watching JPM, BAC, and Wells on the stress test read-through. And I'm watching every regional pretend the AML overhead is someone else's problem.
Management will spin both of these. The stress test pass becomes a victory lap. The AML proposal becomes 'we are committed to compliance leadership.' Neither answer is the answer.
The numbers are the numbers. We just read them faster.
