The Fed just dropped its annual stress test results — and for bank earnings season, this is the tape you read before you read anything else.
Here's what the Fed confirmed: large banks passed. Severe recession scenario, they hold. Capital buffers intact, lending capacity maintained. That's the headline every CEO is going to quote verbatim on every single call this season — and I need you to tattoo this on your brain: stress tests are backward-looking models, not forward-looking balance sheets.
Watch the delta. When JPMorgan, BofA, Wells report, the stress test pass hands management a permission slip to talk up buybacks and dividends. Your job — my job — is to check whether actual CET1 ratios, actual loan loss provisions, and actual NII guidance match the confidence they're about to sell you. Because CFOs love a clean headline. They love it even more when the appendix tables tell a different story.
Separately, Home Federal Bank of Tennessee filed a 13F. Small community bank, Tennessee footprint. Institutional positioning data, nothing systemic. File it, don't trade it.
The enforcement action against TS Banking Group and TS Contrarian Bancshares is also on the board — the Fed moved on both entities. That's not a stress test story, that's a conduct story, and it hits the same week banks are trying to project strength. Worth tracking what the action actually says before earnings season runs cover for it.
The stress test green light is real. Whether it means what management says it means — that's the forensic work. Pull the appendix tables. Not the press release. Never the press release.
The numbers are the numbers. Management can spin. We don't.
