Two Fed items just dropped and one of them actually matters for bank earnings season.
First, the Fed issued enforcement actions against former employees of Atlantic Union Bank and Frost Bank — individual-level, not institution-level. Don't panic on those tickers. Personnel compliance issue. Not a systemic flag. Move on.
Second — and this is the one I'm watching — the Fed's annual stress test results are out. Large banks confirmed well-capitalized to weather a severe recession and keep lending. That's the green light the big banks have been sitting on. Stress test clearance historically unlocks buyback announcements and dividend hike disclosures within 48 hours of the release. JPMorgan, Bank of America, Goldman, Wells Fargo — capital return announcements are the next domino. Watch the timing.
Heading into Q2 bank earnings, when management starts talking capital return flexibility on the call — and they will — this stress test result is the foundation they're standing on. The question isn't whether they cleared it. They did. The question is whether what they actually announce matches what they telegraphed in prior guidance, or whether they sandbagged expectations to look like heroes on the call. I have a guess.
The numbers are the numbers. Management can spin. We don't.
