Two Fed headlines dropping simultaneously — enforcement actions and stress test timing. Both matter for bank earnings season.
First: The Fed just issued enforcement actions against a former Atlantic Union Bank employee and a former Frost Bank employee. No dollar figures released yet — and that silence is worth noting. Individual-level actions from the Fed mean conduct violations. Not the usual institutional fine-and-move-on. Watch both names heading into earnings. Management commentary on internal controls will suddenly get very specific, or very evasive. One of those tells you more than the other.
Second, and this is the one traders should be building around: The Fed has officially set June 24th, 4 p.m. EDT as the stress test results drop. Mark it hard. That single release determines which banks get to raise dividends, run buybacks, or sit in the corner on capital return. JPMorgan, Goldman, Bank of America, Citi — every major bank earnings call this cycle gets shaped by whatever comes out on the 24th. Miss your stress capital buffer and your guidance conversation just got a lot more uncomfortable. CFOs will find creative language for it. We'll be reading the actual numbers.
Stress test day is a shadow earnings event for the entire sector. Two weeks out. If you're not already in your models, you're already late.
The numbers are the numbers. Management can spin. We don't.
